What does an old-neighborhood removal look like?
Spring Branch subdivisions have been around long enough for their yard trees to reach full size, and larger lots were one of the draws for buyers in the 2000s. A big tree on an older lot may lean over a detached garage, a carport and the neighbor’s roof at the same time. The removal is planned in three zones:
- Over buildings. Limbs above roofs and garages are climbed, tied off and lowered on rope, one at a time.
- Over open yard. Where there is lawn below, smaller limbs can be dropped to the ground crew to save time.
- The trunk. With the crown gone, the trunk is either cut in short lengths or, if a wide lot gives a clear lane, felled into the open.
Wood is cut to haul, brush is chipped at the street, and the lawn and drive are cleaned.
Why do old trees fail?
- Decay inside the trunk. A tree can look full and green while the center rots. Cavities, soft wood at the base and fungus are warning signs.
- Root damage. Driveway work, sewer replacement and new foundations on older lots cut roots and can kill a tree slowly.
- Weak forks. Two trunks of equal size meeting in a tight V can split in a storm.
- Dead crown. A tree that has lost much of its top is dropping heavy, brittle wood.
Storms find those weak points. Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 left millions of yards of vegetative debris in Harris County.
Are there rules to check in Spring Branch?
Two sets. First, the City of Houston: its PRD1001 permit covers removing trees on city property, such as rights of way, medians and parks, and on a setback, with a posting 20 days ahead of the work and about 10 business days of review. Second, deed restrictions, which in Houston often fill the role of zoning and vary from one Spring Branch section to the next. Whether the city requires a permit for a backyard tree on a private single-family lot was not confirmed for this page. Ask before you book, especially for a tree near the curb.

Frequently asked questions
Can a tree that hangs over my detached garage come down without hitting it?
Yes. The limbs over the garage are cut small and lowered on rope before the trunk is touched.
The tree looks healthy but has a hollow at the base. Is it safe?
Not always. A cavity at the base can mean decay inside the trunk. Have it looked at before storm season.
Can roots damaged by my sewer repair kill the tree?
They can, sometimes over a few years. Watch for thinning leaves and dead limbs on the side where roots were cut.
Can several trees on my lot come down on one job?
Yes. A group of trees can go on one estimate and be removed on the same work day.
What if the tree is next to a bayou or drainage ditch?
The crew keeps equipment on firm ground and lowers wood away from the water so nothing ends up in the channel.
Will the stump be left?
It is cut low. Grinding it below the soil can be added the same day.
