Young trees: trim them while they are small

Fulshear has grown fast since its 1977 incorporation, and much of the new housing sits in master-planned communities such as Cross Creek Ranch, Tamarron and Jordan Ranch, according to a local real estate guide. Most of the trees in those yards were planted by builders and are still young.

That is the best time to trim. Structural pruning on a young tree is quick work: choose one strong central leader, remove a competing top before it forms a weak fork, space the main limbs, and steer growth away from the roof and the sidewalk. A few cuts now save heavy cuts later, when the same problem limb is as thick as your arm.

The crew also checks stakes and ties. Ties left on too long can cut into the bark as the trunk grows.

Old hardwoods: clean them out and give them room

The city describes its landscape as having century-old hardwoods, and the wooded parts of town, such as Weston Lakes and the wooded pockets on Fulbrook’s large lots, still have plenty of them. A big old tree rarely needs much shaping. It needs:

  • Deadwooding, removing dead limbs before wind brings them down
  • Clearance from the roof, chimney, driveway and pool
  • End-weight reduction on long, heavy limbs reaching over the house
  • Light thinning so wind passes through instead of loading the crown

Topping is not on the list. Cutting a tree off flat leaves big wounds and weak regrowth.

Timing for oaks

The Texas A&M Forest Service advises against pruning or wounding oaks from February through June, when the sap beetles that spread oak wilt are active, and recommends painting any oak wound right away. Many of Fulshear’s old hardwoods are oaks, so Trey’s crew plans oak trimming for late summer, fall and winter. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so fall work also clears dead wood before the next season.

Rules and HOAs

Routine trimming is rarely regulated, but Fulshear’s code does have tree provisions. If heavy work is planned on a large tree, check with the City of Fulshear. Many master-planned communities also have deed restrictions on landscaping, so check the HOA if a trim would change a front-yard tree’s look.

Frequently asked questions

How young is too young to prune a tree?

Very light structural pruning can start within the first few years after planting. Removing a competing top early is easier on the tree than later.

My new tree has two trunks. Should one come out?

Usually, yes. Two equal tops form a weak fork that can split as the tree grows. Choosing one leader while the tree is young avoids that.

Can a century-old oak be trimmed safely?

Yes, with restraint. Old trees respond best to removing dead wood and reducing a few heavy limbs, not to heavy cutting.

When should oaks in Fulshear be trimmed?

Outside February through June, per the Texas A&M Forest Service, to avoid spreading oak wilt.

Does my HOA have to approve tree trimming?

Routine clearance usually does not need approval, but rules vary. Check your deed restrictions before a major change to a front-yard tree.

Can limbs over my pool be cut without dropping debris in it?

Yes. Limbs over a pool are tied off and lowered rather than dropped, so they swing clear of the water.
