Tree Trimming in Cypress, TX

Tree trimming in Cypress, TX keeps limbs off the roof, lifts branches over the driveway, opens up a crowded canopy and clears out dead wood before it drops on its own. Sticks Tree Service sends owner Trey Lamar’s crew from its Cypress North Houston Road office to trim oaks, pines, elms, pecans and the other shade trees of Northwest Houston, at homes and commercial sites alike. Why trim a tree that is still healthy?

A healthy tree keeps growing toward whatever is in its way. Trimming steers that growth before it turns into damage. The usual reasons people call:

  • Clearance over the roof, so limbs stop scraping shingles and filling gutters
  • Raising the canopy over a driveway, sidewalk or street so people and vehicles pass underneath
  • Thinning a dense crown so light reaches the grass below
  • Taking out dead, broken or crossing branches
  • Pulling growth back from siding, windows and the chimney
  • Reshaping a tree after a storm has torn part of it away

What kinds of trimming does Trey’s crew do?

Deadwood removal. Dead branches are the ones most likely to fall, and they come down hardest in wind. Cutting them out is often the single most useful thing a trim does.

Crown raising. The lowest limbs are removed or shortened to give clearance over a lawn, a walkway or a parked car. It is the fix for branches that slap the windshield every time you pull in.

Crown thinning. Selected interior branches come out so the canopy is less dense. The tree keeps its size and shape, but more light gets through.

Limb removal. One heavy limb over the roof, the pool or the back fence is cut in pieces and lowered by rope rather than dropped. This is the trim most people mean when they search for branch or limb removal.

When should oaks around Cypress be trimmed?

With oaks, the calendar matters. The Texas A&M Forest Service says not to prune or wound oak trees from February through June, the months when sap beetles that carry the oak wilt fungus are active. It also asks that any fresh oak wound be painted right away, whatever the season. For the live oaks, water oaks and Shumard oaks on the City of Houston’s native and adapted plant list, that puts routine trimming in the July through January window. A broken limb hanging over the house in April is a different matter: safety comes first, and the cut gets painted the same day.

How does a trimming visit work?

  1. You point out what bothers you: the roof, the driveway, the dead limb, the shade.
  2. The estimate lists each tree and what will be cut from it.
  3. On job day, the crew climbs the tree or uses equipment that suits it and the yard.
  4. Cut branches are lowered by rope over anything breakable, or dropped into a clear area.
  5. Brush is chipped and the yard is cleaned before the crew leaves.

What about a neighbor’s tree hanging over the fence?

In subdivisions where back yards meet at a shared fence, overhanging limbs are a regular trimming request. Talk with your neighbor first. A trim that works for both yards is easier on everyone, and some HOAs have rules about trees along property lines. Trey’s crew can trim what hangs over your side and lower the pieces so nothing lands in the neighbor’s yard.

What goes into the quote?

  • How many trees, and how much of each one is being trimmed
  • Tree height, and whether it is climbed or reached with equipment
  • Limbs over the roof, pool or fence that have to be roped down
  • How much dead wood is in the canopy
  • Back-yard access and room to run the chipper
  • Whether the brush is chipped and hauled or the chips are left as mulch

If a trim will not solve the problem, the estimate says so and points to tree removal in Cypress. For a tree that looks sick rather than overgrown, see tree health and pruning. Branches already on the roof after a storm belong on the emergency tree service page. The full list of services is on tree service in Cypress.

Frequently asked questions

How often should trees in Cypress be trimmed?

It depends on the species, how fast it grows and what it is close to. A fast grower leaning over a roof needs attention sooner than a slow tree in the middle of the yard. Trey’s crew can suggest a schedule for each tree during the estimate.

Can oak trees be trimmed in the spring?

Routine oak trimming should wait. The Texas A&M Forest Service advises no oak pruning or wounding from February through June because of oak wilt. If a broken oak limb is a danger, it is cut and the wound painted right away.

Will trimming hurt my tree?

The aim is to cut only what solves the problem: the dead wood, the limbs in the way, the branches rubbing each other. Taking too much in one visit is what stresses a tree, so the plan is built around the tree as well as the roof.

What is the difference between trimming and pruning?

Most people use the words for the same thing. On this site, trimming means clearance and shape, while pruning on the tree health page means cuts made for the tree’s long-term structure and health.

Can a limb over my roof be removed without damaging it?

Yes. Limbs over a roof are cut in sections and lowered by rope, so each piece is controlled on the way down instead of falling onto the shingles.

Is the brush hauled away after trimming?

Brush is chipped on site and the debris cleaned up. If you would like the chips for your beds, ask and they can be left behind.

Should trees be trimmed before hurricane season?

It is a good time. Hurricane season starts June 1, and a spring trim removes dead and broken limbs before the first strong storm can bring them down. Remember the February through June limit for oaks, so book oak work earlier or later.
