Tree health and pruning in Cypress, TX is for the tree you want to keep. Sticks Tree Service looks at trees that seem sick, weak or unsafe, works out what is wrong, and recommends a fix: pruning for structure, deep root fertilization, cabling for a healthy tree with an awkward fork, or removal when a tree cannot be saved. Owner Trey Lamar’s crew works outward from the Sticks office on Cypress North Houston Road, for homes and commercial properties. Call 281-373-1472 for a free tree assessment.
What are the signs a tree is in poor health?
- A thinner canopy than last year, or smaller leaves
- Branch tips dying back from the top or the outer edge of the crown
- Leaves yellowing, browning or dropping early while nearby trees of the same kind look fine
- Fungus, conks or mushrooms on the trunk or around the root flare
- Oozing sap, cankers or patches of missing bark
- Soil packed hard around the trunk, or the trunk buried deep in fill dirt
None of these alone proves a tree is dying. They are reasons to have someone who knows trees look at it before deciding anything.
What does oak wilt look like?
Oak wilt is a fungal disease that kills oaks, and the Texas A&M Forest Service reports it in 76 Texas counties. On live oaks, the tell-tale sign is leaves with yellow or brown veins, a pattern called veinal necrosis. Red oaks, a group that includes Shumard oak, turn red or brown in summer and can die within about a month of infection. Underground, the fungus moves from tree to tree through connected live oak roots at roughly 75 feet a year. Above ground, sap beetles carry it from fungal mats that form on dead red oaks.
A browning oak in Cypress is not proof of oak wilt. It is a reason to get the tree looked at, and to leave the healthy oaks around it uncut until you know. County maps and testing information are at texasoakwilt.org.
Why prune for health and not just for clearance?
Clearance work asks what is in the way today. Health pruning asks what the tree will be in ten years. On a young tree, that means choosing one strong central leader and removing branches that would grow into a weak, narrow fork. On a mature tree, it means cutting out dead, diseased and crossing limbs, and reducing a heavy limb before it splits from the trunk. Roof and driveway clearance has its own page: tree trimming in Cypress.
The oak calendar applies here too. The Forest Service guidance is to keep pruning saws off oaks from February through June and to seal any oak cut with paint on the day it is made.
What is deep root fertilization?
Deep root fertilization delivers nutrients into the root zone instead of spreading them on top of the grass. Sticks Tree Service uses it to improve the soil around the base of the tree: it reduces compaction and adds air to the soil, which lets the roots work better and grow, and stronger roots mean a healthier, more stable tree. The right mix depends on the tree and the soil, so each tree is assessed first. Trees in packed ground, such as along driveways or where vehicles have parked under the canopy, are common candidates.
When does cabling make sense?
Cabling ties two or more limbs or leaders together. Its purpose is to help a healthy tree with an odd shape resist the stresses of extreme weather. It is not a way to hold an unhealthy tree together; a tree with a rotten trunk or a failing root system needs a different answer, and sometimes that answer is tree removal.
What about invasive trees?
The Texas A&M Forest Service lists Chinese tallow as an invasive tree in East Texas. When an invasive or non-native tree is crowding out the native trees around it, removing it can be the best thing for the rest of the yard.
What goes into the quote?
- How many trees are being assessed or treated
- The type of work: structural pruning, fertilization, cabling or a mix
- Tree size and how much of the crown needs pruning
- Soil condition around the roots
- Season, since oak work waits until after June
- Follow-up visits if a treatment is spread over time

Frequently asked questions
Can a sick tree be saved?
Often, if the problem is found early and the trunk and roots are sound. The assessment looks at the whole tree and the soil, then recommends pruning, fertilization or, when the damage has gone too far, removal.
How do I know if my oak has oak wilt?
Live oaks show yellow or brown veins in the leaves. Red oaks turn red or brown in summer and can die within about a month. Brown leaves have other causes too, so have the tree looked at and hold off pruning nearby oaks.
When is the best time to prune oaks in Cypress?
Outside February through June. The Texas A&M Forest Service advises against pruning or wounding oaks in those months and recommends painting any oak wound right away.
What does deep root fertilization do?
It loosens compacted soil, adds air and puts nutrients where the roots can use them. Better root function and growth make the tree healthier and more stable.
Is cabling safe for an old tree?
Cabling is meant for healthy trees with an awkward shape, to help them handle strong weather. It will not rescue a tree with a rotten trunk or failing roots.
Should I remove Chinese tallow trees?
The Texas A&M Forest Service lists Chinese tallow as invasive in East Texas. If one is crowding native trees, removal is worth considering, and Sticks Tree Service can take it out.
How often should a tree be checked?
Any time you notice a change, and before hurricane season, which starts June 1. A yearly look at your largest trees is a sensible habit.
