A lot of trees have come out lately
Community Impact reported that the Township removed 7,098 of its own trees in 2024, and Hurricane Beryl on July 8 of that year destroyed about 860 of them. Drought, beetles and aging roots were behind many of the rest. The 2018 Community Impact report on canopy put the forest at about 20,900 acres in 2004 and about 18,500 after the 2010 to 2011 drought. Private lots faced the same storms and droughts, and every removal can leave a stump.
The forest itself is loblolly and slash pine with red and water oaks, over magnolia, dogwood, crepe myrtle, wax myrtle and yaupon. In practice that means a stump is rarely in open lawn. It is usually surrounded by roots and understory the owner wants to keep.
Stumps, replanting and the Township
The Woodlands Township’s Standards regulate tree removals and require replanting. If a replant is part of your approval, grinding the old stump gives room to plant nearby. Talk with the Township about where the new tree should go, and plan the grind with that spot in mind. The Township also tells residents that trees on private property are the homeowner’s to remove, and its curbside rules take only small branches, so stump grindings are spread on site or hauled.
How a Woodlands stump is ground
- Walk the route. Find a path for the grinder that does not run over roots of trees that are staying.
- Mark lines. Irrigation and utility lines are located before work.
- Clear the edge. Understory right at the stump is held back or trimmed only as far as needed.
- Grind. The stump is taken below grade, with surface roots of that tree only chased as far as they belong to it.
- Use the grindings. Pine chips can be spread as mulch in beds, raked into the hole or hauled.

Do I need Township approval to grind a stump?
The Standards cover removing living trees and replanting. A stump is what is left after removal, but if you are unsure, ask the Township at 281-210-3800.
Can the grinder fit between my pines?
Usually. Tell the crew the narrowest gap on the way to the stump so a machine that fits comes out.
Will grinding damage the trees I am keeping?
The crew grinds the removed tree’s stump and roots and stays off the roots of trees that remain as much as the space allows.
Can I use the pine grindings as mulch?
Yes. Fresh pine chips work in beds and paths. They can also be raked back into the hole.
Can a replacement tree go where the stump was?
Plant a few feet away from the old spot, where grindings and old roots will not crowd it. Check the Township’s replant rules for species and size.
