Tree Trimming in The Woodlands, TX

In The Woodlands, a good trim keeps the forest look the community was built around while getting dead pine limbs off the roof and out of the walkway. Sticks Tree Service does that light-handed pruning in all eight villages, with Trey Lamar’s crew climbing and cutting from the Cypress office. Call 281-373-1472 to get on the schedule.

Do you offer Tree Trimming in The Woodlands, TX?

Yes. Sticks Tree Service trims pines, oaks and understory trees in Grogan’s Mill, Panther Creek, Sterling Ridge, Creekside Park and the other villages. Most visits cover deadwood removal, roof and gutter clearance, raising low limbs over drives and paths, and thinning crowded oaks.

Trimming a layered forest

Community Impact describes The Woodlands canopy as loblolly and slash pine with red and water oaks, a midstory of magnolia, dogwood and crepe myrtle, and an understory of wax myrtle and yaupon. That layering is the point of the place: more than 35 percent of the community is preserved open space or forest. Trimming here is done from the top layer down without stripping the lower layers, because a lot with every low branch gone no longer looks like The Woodlands.

For the pines, the work is mostly dead limbs and branches resting on the roof. For red and water oaks, the Texas A&M Forest Service advises no pruning or wounding from February through June, when sap beetles that spread oak wilt are active, and painting any oak wound promptly. The agency notes red oaks can die within about a month of infection, so the timing matters more for them than for most trees. Research for this page did not confirm whether Montgomery County is in the oak wilt zone.

Township rules and trimming

The Woodlands Township’s Standards regulate tree removals and require replanting. Ordinary trimming is a different thing from removal, but if a cut would take out most of a tree’s crown, ask the Township first at 281-210-3800. Rules can vary by village.

Storm losses and the case for trimming

Hurricane Beryl on July 8, 2024 destroyed about 860 of the 7,098 Township trees removed in 2024, Community Impact reported, and the Township timeline also lists the May 16, 2024 derecho. Dead limbs high in a pine are the first pieces to come down in a storm. Clearing them before hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30, is the most common reason for a Woodlands trim.

How the crew trims a Woodlands lot

  1. Look at all three layers. Note dead pine limbs, oak limbs on the roof and understory that should stay.
  2. Time the oaks. Oak cuts go outside February through June.
  3. Climb. Dense lots rarely have room for a lift, so the crew climbs.
  4. Cut clean. Limbs come off at the branch collar and are lowered so they do not crash through the understory.
  5. Handle brush. Chips are hauled or left; the Township accepts curbside branches only up to about 4 inches thick and 4 feet long.

What goes into the quote?

  • Tree count and height, and how much deadwood is up there.
  • Time spent lowering limbs through the understory.
  • Roof, gutter and walkway clearance needed.
  • Whether brush is hauled, chipped on site or cut for curbside pickup.
  • Oak timing, if your preferred date falls in spring.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Township approval to trim a tree?

The Standards cover removals and replanting. For heavy cuts that remove most of a crown, ask the Township first.

Can you trim my red oak in May?

Texas A&M Forest Service guidance says to avoid pruning oaks February through June. A red oak is best trimmed in summer, fall or winter.

Will trimming thin out my privacy screen?

Not if you say so. The understory of wax myrtle and yaupon can be left alone while the pines above are cleaned.

Can I put the branches out for pickup?

The Township’s bulletin limits curbside branches to about 4 inches thick and 4 feet long. For larger wood, ask the Township about its Recycling Center at 5402 Research Forest Drive, or have the crew haul it.

Why are pine needles and limbs piling on my roof?

Pines shed dead lower limbs and needles, and branches touching the roof drop them straight on. Clearance trimming and deadwood removal cut that down.

How high can the crew trim?

The crew climbs tall pines, so height is rarely the limit. Access and what is underneath drive the time more than height.
